“My name is Renan, I am from Sao Bernardo do Campo, in Brazil. I deliver food to homeless people in Sao Paulo with a group called Anjos da Rua (which means Angels of the Streets). I feel that we put ourselves in the places of others less fortunate and see the situation in which they are and that no one deserves to be there. It’s hard to change the world, but some people’s world can be easily changed. We usually deliver food, winter supplies and hygiene kits, all things we can raise to help. Most of the time the homeless are very grateful for the things we give them. Sometimes we can get other things aligned so they can have a decent job opportunity. We organize documents and classes so they can receive the proper curriculum to have an opportunity to be legal citizens, get job opportunities that can help them out of poverty. These are simple things that we do not realize have lots of value.

We recently delivered prescription eyeglasses to a homeless man who could not see very well. He was so happy with his glasses, he started reading things to us and telling his friends that were around him. Having his sight restored, it enabled him to get job interviews and see new opportunities.

I think it’s important to put ourselves in other people’s shoes and see that everyone is created equal, with infinite qualities, each in a different way. A lot of people are not on the streets because they do not like to work or are drug addicts who steal, but because of a lack of opportunities and they have become hostage to a failed system.”
